Diesel Injector Problem — Cranks But Won't Start

An engine that cranks healthily without firing usually lacks rail pressure. Injector back-leak, supply faults or pump failure keep pressure below the start threshold.

Fix this issue

Most cranks but won't start issues in diesel engines are caused by failing fuel injectors.

  • ✔Replace worn or leaking injectors
  • ✔Restore performance and fuel economy
  • ✔Prevent further engine damage

Symptoms

Cranks But Won't Start

An engine that cranks healthily without firing usually lacks rail pressure.

Diagnostic Tests

Cranking rail-pressure test

Rail pressure must reach the start threshold within a few seconds of cranking; slow rise points to supply, pump or back-leak faults.

Injector leak-off test

Measures return flow from each injector with graduated bottles. One injector returning well above the others is internally worn.

Live-data rail pressure check

Compares requested vs actual rail pressure at idle, under load and while cranking to separate supply, pump and injector faults.

Common Causes

Excessive injector back-leak

Internal wear lets high-pressure fuel escape to the return line, starving the rail.

Fuel supply restriction

A blocked filter or weak lift pump starves the high-pressure system.

High-pressure pump failure

A worn pump cannot reach cranking pressure — confirmed after supply and back-leak are ruled out.

Repair Solution

Run a full diagnostic scan and record all stored fault codes before clearing anything.Test before replacing: leak-off, live data and balance tests isolate the faulty injector(s).Replace confirmed faulty injectors with bench-tested remanufactured units and code them to the ECU.Always fit new copper washers and seals when an injector is removed.
