Symptoms
Hard starting
A worn injector allows fuel to seep back into the return line when the engine is off. This drops rail pressure and makes cranking take longer. Cold mornings make this worse because the fuel is thicker.
Rough idle
Uneven fuel delivery between cylinders causes the engine to shake and hunt at idle. You may feel vibration through the steering wheel or hear an uneven engine note.
White smoke on startup
White or grey smoke at startup indicates unburnt diesel passing through the combustion chamber. This is caused by an injector that drips fuel rather than atomising it properly.
Black smoke under acceleration
An over-fuelling injector dumps excess diesel into the cylinder. The engine cannot burn it all, producing thick black smoke from the exhaust under load.
Engine misfire
A completely failed injector starves its cylinder of fuel, causing a dead miss. The ECU may log fault codes P0201-P0204 identifying the affected cylinder.
Loss of power
Worn injectors cannot maintain correct fuel pressure and spray pattern at high RPM. The engine feels sluggish, especially when pulling away or overtaking.
Poor fuel economy
Injectors that leak or over-fuel waste diesel. A gradual increase in fuel consumption — 10-20% or more — often points to injector wear across all cylinders.
Knocking or pinking noise
Incorrect injection timing from a faulty injector solenoid causes a metallic knocking sound, especially under load. This can damage pistons and bearings if ignored.
Engine management light
The ECU monitors injector performance continuously. Fault codes related to fuel trim, misfires, or injector circuit faults will trigger the dashboard warning light.
Excessive exhaust smell
Raw or partially burnt diesel in the exhaust produces a strong fuel smell. Combined with visible smoke, this strongly indicates injector problems.
Diagnostic Tests
Leak-off test
The definitive injector diagnostic. Measures fuel return volume from each injector at idle. An injector returning more than double the lowest cylinder indicates failure.
Fuel pressure test
Monitors common-rail fuel pressure with a diagnostic scanner. Pressure drops when a faulty injector allows excess fuel to bypass internally.
Injector balance test
An electronic test performed through the OBD port. The ECU cuts fuel to each injector in sequence and measures the RPM drop. A smaller drop indicates a weak injector.
OBD fault code scan
Fault codes P0201-P0204 (injector circuit faults), P0087 (fuel rail pressure too low), and P0263-P0272 (cylinder contribution faults) all point to injector issues.
Common Causes
Fuel contamination
Water, dirt, or degraded fuel damages the injector nozzle needle and seat. Even microscopic particles score the sealing surfaces, causing internal leakage.
High mileage wear
Injectors are rated for roughly 100,000-150,000 miles. Beyond this, internal clearances increase and spray patterns deteriorate regardless of maintenance.
Electrical solenoid failure
The piezo or solenoid actuator that opens the injector can fail electrically, causing erratic fuel delivery or complete injector shutdown.
Carbon buildup on nozzle tip
Combustion deposits accumulate on the nozzle tip over time, disrupting the spray pattern. This is accelerated by short journeys and low-quality fuel.
Fuel filter neglect
A clogged fuel filter allows contaminants to reach the injectors. Regular filter changes at manufacturer intervals are the single most effective preventative measure.
