Vehicles Using N22A2 Engine
| Vehicle | Engine | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Honda CR-V (Mk3 / RE-series) injector | 2.2 i-CTDi | 2007–2012 |
| Honda Civic (Mk8 / FK-series) injector | 2.2 i-CTDi | 2006–2011 |
Common N22A2 Injector Problems
Rough idle and engine vibration
Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.
Excessive exhaust smoke
Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.
Poor fuel economy
A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.
Engine misfire under load
Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.
Difficult cold starting
Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.
Loss of power
Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.
Increased diesel knock
Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Documented failure modes
- Injector copper washer / seal failure allowing exhaust blow-by around the injector (documented on this engine)
- Injector back-leak beyond specification
- Nozzle wear causing over-fuelling and smoke
Diagnostic guidance
- Inspect around each injector for blow-by deposits — replace leaking washers early to keep combustion gas out of the injector bore
- Clean the injector seat thoroughly and fit a new copper washer on every refit
- Run a comparative leak-off test across all four injectors before ordering
- Injector coding is required after fitting — follow the manufacturer procedure
Fitment note: The 2.2 i-CTDi (N22A1/N22A2) and the later 2.2 i-DTEC use different injector references — match the number etched on the injector body before ordering.
