About the FMBA engine
The FMBA is a 2.0l tdci common rail diesel engine. This engine uses Delphi diesel injectors.

Vehicles Using FMBA Engine
| Vehicle | Engine | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Mondeo Mk3 injector | 2.0 TDCi | 2001–2007 |
| Jaguar X-Type injector | 2.0 D | 2003–2009 |
Common FMBA Injector Problems
Rough idle and engine vibration
Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.
Excessive exhaust smoke
Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.
Poor fuel economy
A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.
Engine misfire under load
Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.
Difficult cold starting
Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.
Loss of power
Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.
Increased diesel knock
Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Engine Intelligence
Ford Mondeo 2.0 / 2.2 Duratorq TDCi (Delphi EJDR)
Documented failure modes
- Excessive injector back-leak preventing rail pressure build when hot (classic Delphi EJDR failure)
- Worn injector internals causing combustion knock
- Low-pressure fuel supply aeration compounding hot-start faults
Diagnostic guidance
- A warm-engine leak-off test is the decisive diagnostic on this family — cold tests can pass a failing injector
- Delphi injectors are calibrated: the new injector's calibration code must be programmed at fitting
- Check the low-pressure supply and lift pump before condemning injectors
- Label leak-off pipes before removal to avoid cross-connection
Fitment note: FMBA/FMBB/N7BA/N7BB (2.0) and FIFA (2.2) use different Delphi EJDR references — match against the number etched on the injector.
