About the BMA engine

The BMA is a 2.0l tdi pd common rail diesel engine. This engine uses Siemens VDO / Continental diesel injectors.

Common BMA Injector Problems

1

Rough idle and engine vibration

Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.

2

Excessive exhaust smoke

Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.

3

Poor fuel economy

A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.

4

Engine misfire under load

Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.

5

Difficult cold starting

Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.

6

Loss of power

Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.

7

Increased diesel knock

Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Engine Intelligence

VW / Audi 2.0 TDI 16v PPD (BKP era — Passat B6, Golf, Touran, A6 — Siemens piezo PD)

Documented failure modes

  • Piezo unit injector internal/electrical failure — the ECU can shut injection down, causing the documented sudden-stall behaviour of this PPD system
  • Injector delivery drift showing as deviation values out of range
  • Injector seal leakage with diesel smell and contamination around the injector wells

Diagnostic guidance

  • This is the Siemens piezo Pumpe-Düse (PPD) system — diagnosis and parts differ from both common-rail AND Bosch solenoid PD engines
  • On a sudden cut-out, read cylinder-specific codes and use injector isolation to identify the failed unit
  • Check the injector loom and connectors before condemning a piezo unit
  • Follow the manufacturer clamp torque and setting procedure exactly when fitting

Fault codes linked to this engine's injectors

Fitment note: The 16v BKP-era engines use the 03G130073S-type Siemens piezo (PPD) unit — NOT interchangeable with the 8v Bosch solenoid PD unit; match the number etched on the injector body.
