About the DFGA engine

The DFGA is a 2.0l tdi common rail diesel engine. This engine uses Bosch diesel injectors.

Common DFGA Injector Problems

1

Rough idle and engine vibration

Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.

2

Excessive exhaust smoke

Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.

3

Poor fuel economy

A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.

4

Engine misfire under load

Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.

5

Difficult cold starting

Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.

6

Loss of power

Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.

7

Increased diesel knock

Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Engine Intelligence

VW / Audi / Škoda / SEAT 2.0 TDI (EA288 Gen2 — A4, A3, Golf, Passat, Tiguan)

Documented failure modes

  • Injector delivery drift showing as deviation values out of range
  • Injector electrical faults logging cylinder circuit codes
  • Leaking or stuck-open injector diluting the engine oil with diesel

Diagnostic guidance

  • Log injector correction values in diagnostic software — a large outlier identifies the weak unit
  • Check the engine oil for diesel dilution on suspected leaking injectors
  • EGR, DPF and fuel-pressure faults overlap with injector symptoms on the EA288 — confirm with leak-back and live rail-pressure data
  • Injector coding is required after fitting — follow the manufacturer procedure

Fault codes linked to this engine's injectors

Fitment note: EA288 Gen2 2.0 TDI spans many engine codes and outputs, and the 1.6 TDI side of the platform uses different references — always match the number etched on the injector body.
