Common BUY Injector Problems
Rough idle and engine vibration
Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.
Excessive exhaust smoke
Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.
Poor fuel economy
A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.
Engine misfire under load
Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.
Difficult cold starting
Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.
Loss of power
Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.
Increased diesel knock
Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Engine Intelligence
VW / Audi / Škoda / SEAT 2.0 TDI 8v PD (BMM era — Golf, Passat, Touran, A3, Octavia)
Documented failure modes
- Unit injector (Pumpe-Düse) wear causing delivery drift and rough running
- Injector solenoid faults logging cylinder circuit codes
- Injector seal leakage letting fuel past the sealing surfaces — diesel smell and fuel dilution of the oil
Diagnostic guidance
- This is a Pumpe-Düse (unit injector) engine — there is no common rail; diagnosis differs from CR engines
- Check the injector wiring loom under the rocker cover first — harness faults routinely mimic injector failure on PD engines
- Use injection-quantity deviation data and cylinder isolation to identify the failing unit
- Unit injectors are cam-actuated — inspect the camshaft lobes when replacing injectors on high-mileage engines; torque the clamps exactly to procedure
Fitment note: PD unit injectors differ by output, year and technology — these BMM-era engines use the Siemens VDO 03G130073T PPD unit injector; always match the number etched on the injector body.
