Common 9HV Injector Problems

1

Rough idle and engine vibration

Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.

2

Excessive exhaust smoke

Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.

3

Poor fuel economy

A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.

4

Engine misfire under load

Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.

5

Difficult cold starting

Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.

6

Loss of power

Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.

7

Increased diesel knock

Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Engine Intelligence

PSA / Ford 1.6 HDi & TDCi 90 (DV6 — 9HV/9HS, 207, 307, Berlingo, Focus)

Documented failure modes

  • Injector seat / copper washer sealing failure allowing combustion blow-by (widely documented on the DV6)
  • Injector clamp movement letting the injector lift slightly and destroy the seat seal
  • Injector back-leak beyond specification on high-mileage engines

Diagnostic guidance

  • Lift the engine cover and inspect each injector base for hardened black carbon before diagnosis — blow-by is the classic DV6 failure
  • If a seal has been leaking for a while, clean or recut the injector seat — a new washer alone will not seal a damaged seat
  • Always fit a new copper washer and torque the clamp to the manufacturer procedure
  • Run a comparative leak-off test across all four injectors before ordering

Fault codes linked to this engine's injectors

Fitment note: The 1.6 HDi/TDCi family used both Bosch and Siemens injection across variants — 9HV/9HS 90 hp engines take the Bosch CRI1 unit; always match the number etched on the injector body.
