Common problems solved by these injectors

About the 4HS engine

The 4HS is a 2.2l hdi / tdci common rail diesel engine. This engine uses Bosch diesel injectors.

Common 4HS Injector Problems

1

Rough idle and engine vibration

Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.

2

Excessive exhaust smoke

Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.

3

Poor fuel economy

A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.

4

Engine misfire under load

Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.

5

Difficult cold starting

Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.

6

Loss of power

Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.

7

Increased diesel knock

Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Engine Intelligence

PSA / Ford 2.2 HDi & TDCi (DW12 — 407, 607, C5, C6, C-Crosser, Outlander)

Documented failure modes

  • Bosch piezo injectors are highly sensitive to return-line restriction — a blocked return circuit causes rough idle, hard starting and knock without the injector being dead
  • Injector correction values drifting out of range as the unit wears
  • Injector seat seal leakage producing tar-like deposits around the injectors

Diagnostic guidance

  • Check the injector return lines and their filters for blockage before condemning a piezo injector — return restriction mimics injector failure on this engine
  • Read injector correction values: unusually high corrections identify a worn unit
  • Rule out rail-pressure control (regulator / relief valve) faults on persistent starting and idle complaints
  • Inspect wiring and connectors — electrical faults can mimic a bad injector

Fault codes linked to this engine's injectors

Fitment note: The 2.2 HDi/TDCi DW12 family spans PSA (4H*) and Ford (Q4BA/Q4WA) engine codes with different injector references by generation — match the number etched on the injector body.
