Common problems solved by these injectors

About the N47D20 engine

The N47D20 is a 2.0-litre inline-4 turbodiesel engine produced by BMW. Introduced in 2007 as a replacement for the M47 engine, the N47D20 became the backbone of BMW's diesel range. It uses Bosch piezo common rail injectors (primary OEM number 13538576298) and was fitted to the 1 Series (E87/F20), 3 Series (E90/F30), 5 Series (F10), X1 (E84), and X3 (F25). The N47 is available in several output …

Common N47D20 Injector Problems

1

Rough idle and engine vibration

Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.

2

Excessive exhaust smoke

Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.

3

Poor fuel economy

A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.

4

Engine misfire under load

Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.

5

Difficult cold starting

Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.

6

Loss of power

Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.

7

Increased diesel knock

Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

The N47 is available in several output variants: the N47D20A (lower output, 116d/118d) and N47D20C (higher output, 120d/320d/520d). Known issues include the timing chain on early examples, and injector wear after 80,000–120,000 miles causing rough idle, smoke, and loss of power. When replacing injectors, BMW-specific coding (ISTA) is required for each injector after fitting.
