Common problems solved by these injectors

About the D4FC engine

The D4FC is a 1.1 / 1.4 crdi common rail diesel engine. This engine uses Delphi diesel injectors.

Common D4FC Injector Problems

1

Rough idle and engine vibration

Worn injector nozzles cause uneven fuel spray, leading to rough idle at low RPM. Most noticeable when the engine is cold.

2

Excessive exhaust smoke

Black or blue-grey smoke on acceleration indicates poor fuel atomisation. This is often caused by carbon buildup on the injector nozzle tip.

3

Poor fuel economy

A worn or leaking injector delivers incorrect fuel quantities, reducing efficiency by 10–20% in severe cases.

4

Engine misfire under load

Intermittent misfires during acceleration suggest one or more injectors are failing to deliver the correct fuel pressure.

5

Difficult cold starting

Degraded injector nozzles struggle to atomise fuel at lower cranking pressures, causing extended crank times in cold weather.

6

Loss of power

Gradual power loss across the rev range, particularly above 2500 RPM, can indicate injector flow rate degradation.

7

Increased diesel knock

Louder than normal combustion noise, especially at idle, can indicate incorrect injection timing due to worn injector internals.

Common Rail Direct Injection

The D4FC is a 1.1 / 1.4 crdi common rail diesel engine. This engine uses Delphi diesel injectors.

Engine Intelligence

Hyundai / Kia 1.1 & 1.4 CRDi (D3FA / D4FC — i20, i30, Rio, Ceed)

Documented failure modes

  • Excessive injector back-leak preventing rail pressure from building
  • Nozzle wear degrading the spray pattern and causing rough running and smoke
  • Fuel contamination damage — Delphi common-rail systems are sensitive to poor-quality diesel

Diagnostic guidance

  • Run a leak-off (back-leak) comparison across all injectors before condemning one — a hard-start with P0087 often traces to a single high-return injector
  • Delphi injectors carry a C2I/C3I calibration code — register the new code after fitting
  • Rule out air in the low-pressure fuel system before replacing hardware on cranking-no-start complaints
  • Use fresh sealing washers and clean the injector seats before refitting

Fault codes linked to this engine's injectors

Fitment note: The D3FA 1.1 and D4FC 1.4 CRDi share the Delphi injector platform but references differ across years and outputs — always match the reference etched on the injector body.
