P0269 Cylinder 3 Contribution/Balance — Causes & Fix
Updated for 2026 diagnostics & repair guidance
P0269 at a Glance
What it means
The ECU has detected that cylinder 3 is contributing less power than the other cylinders.
Most common cause
Worn or failing cylinder 3 injector, causing uneven fuel delivery.
Severity
Moderate — driveable but causes rough running and increased emissions.
Can you drive?
Yes, but performance is reduced. Address within 1–2 weeks.
Typical repair cost
£100–£350 for injector replacement.
What Does P0269 Mean?
P0269 indicates the ECU has detected a power imbalance in cylinder 3. The ECU monitors crankshaft acceleration after each cylinder fires — when cylinder 3 contributes noticeably less torque, P0269 is stored. On 4-cylinder engines, cylinder 3 is particularly prone to thermal stress as it's in the centre of the block with less cooling airflow, which can accelerate injector wear.
Common Causes
Injector-Related Causes
Worn cylinder 3 injector nozzle
Heat and mileage cause the nozzle to wear, altering spray pattern and reducing combustion efficiency.
Injector drift (calibration loss)
The cylinder 3 injector's delivery has drifted outside the ECU's trim range, causing a measurable power deficit.
Carbon deposits on injector tip
Cylinder 3's central position means higher heat soak, accelerating carbon build-up on the nozzle.
Other Possible Causes
Low compression in cylinder 3
Worn piston rings or valves reduce compression, preventing proper combustion.
Glow plug failure (cylinder 3)
A failed glow plug causes cold-start contribution faults that may persist as a stored code.
Symptoms Drivers Notice
- Rough, uneven idle
- Vibration through the vehicle at standstill
- Slight power loss during acceleration
- Marginally higher fuel consumption
- Engine management light on
- Occasional smoke puff on acceleration
Vehicles Commonly Affected
Can You Still Drive with P0269?
Yes — P0269 is driveable. Expect rough idle and slightly reduced power. Address within 1–2 weeks. If the engine becomes very rough or heavy smoke appears, have it checked sooner to prevent DPF contamination.
How Mechanics Diagnose P0269
- 1
Read cylinder contribution values
Check live balance data — cylinder 3 will show a negative deviation (e.g., -15% or worse).
- 2
Perform injector leak-off test
Measure fuel return from the cylinder 3 injector. Elevated return confirms injector wear.
- 3
Swap injectors between cylinders
Swap cylinder 3 injector with another. If the fault moves, the injector is confirmed faulty.
- 4
Check injector coding
Verify the IMA/QR code for cylinder 3 is correctly programmed. Mis-coding causes balance faults.
- 5
Compression test
If the injector is fine, test compression to rule out mechanical wear in cylinder 3.
Repair Solutions & Costs
Replace cylinder 3 injector
A remanufactured OEM-spec injector restores correct fuel delivery and cylinder balance.
Injector cleaning
Professional ultrasonic cleaning can restore performance if carbon build-up is the sole cause.
Re-code injector
If the physical injector is fine but incorrectly coded, reprogramming resolves the fault.
Replace glow plug (cylinder 3)
If the glow plug is failed, replacement fixes cold-start contribution faults.
When Injector Replacement Is Required
Replacement is needed when the leak-off test shows elevated return, cylinder contribution deviation exceeds 15%, or the injector has over 100,000 miles.
Compatible Injector Part Numbers
5 injectors compatible with engines affected by P0269.
Cross Reference Numbers
OEM and alternative part numbers for injectors affected by P0269.
